The Art of Light: Vindauga

September 1 – October 31

Lumens Light + Living and the Center for Contemporary Art, Sacramento ‘s staff are pleased to present an exhibition of work by Sacramento-based artist Diana Jahns. The title of the show, Vindauga , comes from the Old Norse word for window, literally a compound word made up of vindr , meaning “wind” and auge , meaning “eye.” This “wind-eye” (window) clearly refers to an opening without glass, an architectural feature in which the wind could strike the viewer’s eye. In the show, two of Jahns’ series of works are presented, a series captured at the 2011 California State Fair Midway and a larger series dealing with architecture and light. In the State Fair series, Jahns captures the fleeting moment of the end of day, when the clouds of twilight sky erupt into brilliant pinks and dark blues and contrasts it with the engulfing glow of the Midway’s artificial lights. The riders are frozen in the moment, captured in the transition between the present and future. In the second series, Jahns starts with images of the common place, a portion of a building, a reflection, a parked automobile and uses this as the basis to create her geometric photographic tapestries. In the series of photographs she will juxtapose light and dark overlapping images or forms, sometimes in parallel passages and, at times, in contrapuntal opposition. Her images are simultaneously geometrically strong as well a being incredibly delicate in the careful use of color, reflection, composition and texture. Jahns’ images capture the moment: and allow the viewer to experience them with “the wind” in their eyes.

About the Art of Light series: Lumens Light + Living has invited the staff of the Center for Contemporary Art, Sacramento to collaborate on a series of exhibitions called The Art of Light. In this series, we explore how artists have taken the concept of light to create a unique visual experience using both traditional and nontraditional media. The visual possibilities of light are infinite and only limited by the artists’ unique experience.

Artist Preview Reception: Thursday, September 6, 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. Free.

Second Saturday Reception, Saturday, September 8, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Free.
